Well, the short answer is that Machete News was taken by a Spanish-language (or derivative) blogger. I thought about translating it, but what if it was some sort of South American guerilla-type account? Nah.
Mr. W. told his Sacramento barber, Patty, that we were moving and got her up to date on the things that all fell into place so easily to make the move happen. She said something to the effect of, "I hate to see you go, but I won't complain because it sounds like God is making a path to send you there since everything's happening the way it is." Mr. W., of course, embellished it when he repeated it to me... He said, "Yeah, God's leading the way, cutting the path with a machete!"
The timing of my dad's passing, the unexpected layoff from Agilent, the complications that would arise from the sale of the Vancouver house (it seems that since we are part of a Homeowner's Association, they would have to approve whomever we sold it to and if they didn't approve the buyer, they'd get first right to buy the house!). How quickly and smoothly our Sacramento home sold, all kinds of things.
When we got to Vancouver, the machete didn't stop swinging, either. It became very clear to us that the house needed a lot of maintenance, and if we'd sold it to Truoc (that was the original plan, so he wouldn't have to move the stuff out!), he would have been WAY out of his element. All of the service people - mover, home inspector, duct cleaner, locksmith, window people, HVAC people, carpet cleaners and more - were friendly, prompt (we didn't have to wait more than a couple of days to get any of them out to our house) and reasonably priced!
It took 5 minutes to get our truck smogged. We could go down to Hi School Pharmacy (kindof like a small-town Long's Drugs) to register the two vehicles. 15 minutes to get our driver's licenses switched to Washington State.
One evening we stopped in at Starbuck's. As we were walking in, we met Dr. Cleveland. He's a local veterinarian who lives within a 1/2 mile of us! We didn't even have to go digging around to find someone for puppy-butt! How cool is THAT?
At the beginning of this adventure we kept trying to plan things, but 'things' just happened in the way that, ultimately, made our lives easier. We finally gave up.
Neither Mr. W. nor I have a clue why we are 'supposed' to be here, but we've buckled our seatbelts and are now trying to enjoy the ride.

J - My best friend. K - J's husband. L - my teaching backup and pattern designing partner - a fellow quilter who's got even more gadgets than I do!
